The
River Eden is arguably the main river in
Cumbria.
It rises from the limestone fells around Mallerstang at a height
of 2,200 feet and then travels 145 kms to enter the sea at the Solway
Firth.
The main tributaries are:
To the South
the Caldew, Petteril and Eamont
and from the North the Irthing.
The average discharge, measured at Carlisle is just under 52 cubic
metres per second. However in January 2005 during the local flooding
this increased to 1,500 cubic metres per second.
