Wood Hall Gardens, Cockermouth UK
Cockermouth is a small market town South East of Maryport in the
North West of England. The gardens at Wood Hall are little known
but an absolute gem; they cover just over 5 acres and were designed
by Thomas Mawson in 1910. South facing they have views towards
Lorton Vale and Buttermere fells in Cumbria.
Notable features include: Rose walk and a Box walk Paved garden Large formal fish pond Historically the earliest records date back to the 9th century. The "Hall" was built by Henry Tolson in 1544 and in 1821 it was rebuilt by the Fisher family. However, most of the buildings were destroyed by fire in the 1870's. The current buildings date from this time when the Lord Lieutenant of Cumberland purchased the site. The gardens can now be enjoyed by guests who rent accommodation there.
